Springtime in a Small Town
Peter Bosch & Simone Simons
2006
A captivating installation inspired by Nikola Tesla’s vibration experiments.
Inspired by Nikola Tesla’s vibration experiments, this sound installation places wooden crates fitted with coil springs and electric motors deep within a forest setting. A computer controls the motors, yet cannot predict their physical consequences. Small changes cascade into unpredictable patterns of sound and movement, shifting imperceptibly between order and chaos.
The forest environment gives the work a meditative quality unlike any of its predecessors. Every combination of sounds is unique and unrepeatable, as the installation quietly takes possession of the landscape around it.
about the artist
Peter Bosch (NL) studied psychology and sonology; Simone Simons (NL) studied Audiovisual Design at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy. They have worked together since 1985 and have been based near Valencia, Spain, since 1997.
Since 1990, Bosch & Simons have created autonomous “music machines” that balance on the boundary between order and chaos. Their work, where sound, movement, and resonance converge, exists at the intersection of art, science, and technology. Small changes within the system continually produce unpredictable results.
Their best-known work, De Krachtgever (1993), won a Golden Nica at the Prix Ars Electronica in Linz. The installations of Bosch & Simons have been exhibited worldwide and have received numerous awards.
