Danny de Jong and Isaak Duerinck have been selected for Art Educator in Residence for the academic year 2022-2023 with their research project “Antwerp Queer Choir”.
With this project, they want to investigate how singing together can have an empowering effect on people from a queer community and how one’s own voice can be discovered and used as a powerful means of expression.
The positive impact of group singing on physical and mental health has been repeatedly proven. It connects people, creates and nurtures social bonds. Those who would never get on stage as individuals suddenly let themselves go completely wild in a group. The group feeling transcends the ego and at the same time boosts self-confidence. That self-confidence can be a fragile thing among people from the queer community, who do not always feel at home in a normative society because of their orientation or gender identity. It is not only on looks and movements that binary labels are pasted, voice is also subject to all kinds of prejudices.
Those who sing expose themselves. It is very important in projects like this that participants feel safe to express themselves as singers, but especially as human beings.
The term ‘people from the queer community’ in this project and research indicates people who question gender- and heteronormative society and the role they play in it, regardless of their social, racial, religious background or physical abilities.
This project is a collaboration between Musica Impulse Centre, Royal Conservatory of Antwerp and DE SINGEL.
