Masterclasses Charpentier

Barok ornamentation & jazz improvisation by Peter Van Heyghen & Jasper Blom

Wed 01 May 2019 - 10:00 to Thu 02 May 2019 - 23:00
Concertgebouw Brugge, 't Zand 34, 8000 Brugge

In this double masterclass baroque musicians will learn the subtleties of the refined decorative style of Marc-Antoine Charpentier and the French baroque music, while the jazz musicians will get their inspiration from Charpentier’s work to improvise with Jasper Blom.

Want to learn from the best? Come to Bruges, let yourself be immersed in the music of Charpentier and enjoy two days of top-coaching and fascinating contacts with a group of like-minded musicians.

The masterclasses are open to advanced conservatory students and pre-professional musicians (vocal, instrumental, solo or in ensemble) who want to broaden their horizons or go deeper into the baroque ornamentation or jazz improvisation.

The repertory focuses on the work of Marc-Antoine Charpentier for both baroque and jazz musicians. For baroque musicians, we expect a proposal of a maximum of 3 works from which 1 will be chosen to work on in the masterclass. The jazz musicians will receive basic material for the improvisations at the beginning of March.

Maximum 8 participants per teacher. The selection is made by the teachers on the basis of CV and the submitted recordings.

Peter Van Heyghen is an internationally renowned soloist, conductor, teacher and experienced coach specializing in the historical performance practice of both renaissance and baroque music. He was trained as a singer and recorder player and teaches at the conservatories of Amsterdam, Brussels and The Hague. Peter Van Heyghen performs worldwide as a soloist, with his ensembles More Maiorum, Mezzaluna and Les Muffatti and inspires internationally during lectures, guest lectures, masterclasses and workshops.

Jasper Blom is a leading tenor saxophonist of the Dutch Jazz scene and one of the most versatile soloists of the BeNeLux. His band, the Jasper Blom Quartet features four internationally acclaimed Dutch jazz musicians, that have been playing together for more than 20 years. Blom's intelligent compositions cover a wide range of stylistic influences and are a true showcase of what melody, rhythm and harmony have to offer in composition and improvisation

In his work stories develop, while musical languages are challenged by the individuality and interplay of the band members. In the coming season, the Quartet will present two live CDs with compositions inspired by the old Flemish polyphonists.

Café Improvisé

The masterclass closes in the relaxed atmosphere of a Café Improvisé: the relationship between performers and audience loosens up, the audience is less reserved, and the musicians might have a chat. We introduce today's audience to the musicians of tomorrow and give them the opportunity to challenge and inspire each other while fraternizing musically. During the Café Improvisé, show moments of the masterclasses alternate with the winning entries of a composition competition for amateurs. Klara presenter Kaat Haest hosts the evening with winged words.

These masterclasses are part of the Topstukweek around Charpentiers Te Deum of Concertgebouw Brugge. During these “Masterpiece Weeks” Concertgebouw focusses on a masterpiece you should have heard and seen live at least once in your life. Through masterclasses, new concert formats, meet & greets and top concerts you discover the program and the story behind the masterpiece.
