Mary Stuart: a despicable murderess, unwilling spy or proud heroine? There are widely differing interpretations of the tragic life of the woman who was probably Scotland’s most famous monarch (1542-1587). Lore Binon, Bobby Mitchell and Sofie Vanden Eynde create a contemporary sound picture with song, the lute, theorbo, fortepiano and electronics, keeping their distance from the historical context and making space for all these multiple meanings. This theatrical concert draws on the rich musical tradition in which Mary’s life played out, and the music composed about Mary Stuart herself. One of the most exciting Dutch composers of our time, Robert Zuidam, has set to music some of the sonnets that Nobel Prize winner Joseph Brodsky wrote about Mary Stuart. Also with music by composers including Byrd, Carissimi, Donizetti and Berio.

AlbaNova presents the Belgian preview of this unusual project.
