Summerschool goes online!

Rhythms of Life: the 's-Hertogenbosch Choirbooks

Mon 24 Aug 2020 - 12:00 to Sat 29 Aug 2020 - 20:00

The corona crisis has changed all our lives over the past months. Unfortunately this includes the cancellation of many live events, amongst which our annual polyphony Summerschool. But all is not lost! Musica, Impulse Centre for Music is teaming up with AMUZ, Festival of Flanders - Antwerp and Cappella Pratensis to bring you an online version of the course this year. Taking place in the same week as originally planned, the Summerschool will still focus on the “Rhythms of Life” at the Confraternity of Our Illustrious Lady in the Dutch city of ’s-Hertogenbosch. We’ll work on the Missa Cum jocunditate (Credo) and look at other pieces from the rich collection of choirbooks still held by the Confraternity. As ever, we’ll sing “straight from the source”, working exclusively from facsimiles of the choirbooks.

Daily sessions will include a mix of live interaction and pre-recorded resources for home study. The course is designed to accommodate both medium level and the more advanced vocalists, with the first days featuring tutorials ranging from medium level to complex notational situations. The second half of the course will offer intensive sessions on the music itself, working on such issues as how to mould the polyphonic line, singing against other parts, and applying the system of solmization. We’ll round off the week by putting it all together in a virtual choir—all from the comfort of your own home!

An online edition offers the chance for a wider group to take part than in other years. And this year the distance and the timing will not be an obstacle (the live sessions will take place in the evening, European time).

We invite you to join us on this digital-polyphonic adventure!
