Residence MusiMatrix Down The Rabbit Hole

26/03/2021

Life crawls where it cannot go. That certainly applies to the 2021 edition of MusiMatrix. Grafted onto For Life, the annual theme of Concertgebouw Brugge, the creative process started in collaboration with Down The Rabbit Hole new music collective in what were then unsuspecting times. Only to, forced by circumstances, end up in a sort of sleep-wake situation a little later. Coincidence or not, the choice to work around biological processes seemed equally prophetic.

In the meantime, the project has been awoken completely out of anaesthesia. After a three-day residency at Alden Biesen, the new MusiMatrix is alive and kicking. Built around works by Elena Rykova, Simon Loeffler, Yiran Zhao and Simon Steen-Andersen, a new intriguing course is ready. In spring of 2022, 2000 primary school children will once again be actively introduced to contemporary composed music and a group of young performers.

Accompanied by experienced Musica teachers, the children will pass through a musical operating table, bring a Frankenstein monster to life and become the performers of a composition based on... touch. The final performance forges musicians, children and teachers together into one large breathing organism.

Fresh and tangible musical ideas, once back at school, can thrive in their own classroom environment.

MusiMatrix is created within the project 'Sounds Now' co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union. In co-operation with Landcommanderij Alden Biesen, Concertgebouw Brugge and deSingel Antwerpen.
