Sound art – the new generation

Under the heading ‘Showcase Emerging Sound’, STUK, Q-O2 and Musica present an annual sampling of new sound art in Belgium. Also this year, four promising sound artists were selected to present a work during the festival: Raphael Malfliet (‘Governors’), Léa Roger (‘Primary Respiratory Mechanism’), Vica Pacheco (‘Animacy Or A Breath Manifest’) and Marija Rasa Kudabaité (‘111A / -18°C’). Although these artists are active in a variety of disciplines, this edition focuses primarily on electroacoustic live performance, where composition and improvisation come together.

In the spring, three of the four artists spent a week in residence at Klankenbos. Here they could experiment and research to their heart’s content, in preparation for their performance during the Showcase.

Showcase Emerging Sound 2022

Raphael Malfliet is a versatile creator, as electric bassist, composer and resident with the Antwerp collective ChampdAction. In the piece Governors, he and 2 other players explore the interplay between feedback signals – the harmonic interplay, but also the unpredictability.

Léa Roger is interested in the unpredictable and fragile aspects of sound. Through improvisation, recordings, compositions and installations, she seeks physical immersive experiences that put us in a state of semi-hypnosis. During her Showcase she will perform a work for harp and mechanical bow.

Vica Pacheco created a series of beautiful flute sculptures that open up a totally new sound universe, where organic breathing and energy are central. In doing so, the Mexican multimedia artist builds on an ancient musical and ritual practice fueled by mythology.

Marija Rasa Kudabaitė builds careful soundscapes for her multichannel speaker system, featuring delicate noise, electronic sounds and field recordings of exceptionally quiet places. Her work explores sonic spatialization, texture and fragility.

Showcase Emerging Sound is a project of STUK – House for Dance, Image & Sound, Q-O2 Workshop, Musica Impulse Centre & C-TAKT.
