Composer Wim Henderickx (60) passed away

It is with deep regret that we inform you of the sudden passing of composer Wim Henderickx. Wim was a towering figure in our national music world as a composer, musician and conductor. For Musica, he was also a beloved collaborator who enriched many of our projects with his infectious enthusiasm and sharp artistic vision.

Wim Henderickx is known to the general public as one of the most important contemporary composers in Belgium. Just recently, his successful opera “De bekeerlinge”, an adaptation of Stefan Hermans’ novel, was premiered by Opera Ballet Vlaanderen.

Wim was also closely involved with our organisation and our projects for many years. He had been a member of our General Assembly since 2011. For 23 years, he was the regular teacher for the SoundMine composition courses, where he guided young composers in their creative process with great enthusiasm and an open mind. Wim also collaborated on ‘Klinkende Klanken’ in 2012, a project in which students with mental disabilities learned to create their own musical improvisations, and ‘Het Geluid van Hasselt en Genk’ in 2017. Wim was also assigned as the composer for the upcoming Babelut Parcours production, on which we had just started working.

Besides his many musical achievements, we will always remember Wim as a warm and engaging person, blessed with a versatile and infectious talent. We wish much strength to his family and the many, many people who knew him well. Those who would like to offer them a few words of courage and sympathy can do so via the mourning register on the website of the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp.
