Art Educator in Residence

Art Educator in Residence (AER) is a talent development project of Musica Impulse Centre, Royal Conservatoire Antwerp (KCA) and DE SINGEL International Arts Campus. Together, we support young art teachers-in-training from the KCA who develop new formats for art education and audience participation. The support forms part of an arts education master’s thesis project or an arts education internship project.

With the AER programme, we want to help develop innovative ideas in arts education. The partners provide guidance and support in terms of knowledge, technology and communication. At the same time, our collaboration with DE SINGEL makes the selected projects visible to the public. Meanwhile, AER has grown into a quality label and a household name for young art educators.

2021

Juicy Ijsselmuiden – Worthless Good

An examination of things that have no value. Juicy brought together three Deurnese target groups: vzw Recht-op, Stedelijk Lyceum De Waterbaan and Buurtwerk Dinamo. Through a participatory creation process, a colorful and playful exhibition was built.

2020

Matthias Van den Brande, Sone Mikaelian and Andrea Van Acker – Dis|connected

A short film about loneliness among young people. Conceived as a musical performance, but due to the corona crisis the creators were forced to make both preparation and performance virtual.

2018-2019

Andy Van Kerschaver – Beveren (i.s.m. de Rode Antraciet vzw)

A personal adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth with inmates. The closed nature of the prison system does not allow the inmates to the public, nor vice versa. Andy uses his own artistic competencies as a player and creator to bring their stories to the outside world.

Misja Nolet – Wachtgeluiden (i.c.w. Wilde Raven vzw, Sascha Bornkamp and Yelena Schmitz)

A series of auditory portraits of female refugees using children’s songs from their home countries, presented as an audio installation at waiting places in public spaces.

2017-2018

Lore Borremans – Free as a bird

Dancer-choreographer Lore Borremans created a performance based on a workshop of the same name, where children were given the space to search for their identity in all open-mindedness. At the same time, they were taught to respect the choices of others.

Jolien Van De Sande – When the gods slept (in collaboration with Het Fluisterhuis)

The story of the brutal misfortune, natural selection or the all-consuming fate of a God in hibernation is told using the basis of different stages in a process of assimilation.
